Umbrella Man on Blends Ver. II #33
Mixed Media on Paper
24" x 20"
The 'Umbrella Man' is one of Peter Max's most famous signature characters that emerged during his 'Neo-Fauve' painting period of the 1980s. Originally inspired by a famous photograph of the cellist Pablo Casals, playing his cello on the beach, 'Umbrella Man' is a felliniesque character, with a coat, hat and umbrella rendered in a surge of colors looking into the horizon ahead.
'Umbrella Man on Blends' holds an unusual color contrast for the artist - planes of rich, deep hues paint his coat, hat and umbrella with highlights of lighter textural and kinetic brushwork close by. Umbrella Man looks into a soft, color-blend sky, punctuated at top by a rich cerulean blue. The work holds a bold and soft, unexpected, fauvist color palette.
