Solar Phenomenon Ver. I #10
Mixed Media on Paper
40" x 30"
In 'Solar Phenomenon,' Peter Max's fascination with space and the indelible influences from his childhood growing up in Shanghai, China are expressed together in his elaborate black line work, bold, fauvist color and fluid, expressionistic brushwork.
The artist renders the life-giving heat and energy of the sun with intricate tendrils of solar flares and bursts of solar winds executed in fiery colors.
The Earth, planets, stars and spacecraft hover in the heavens, as the phenomenon is watched on a serene, reflecting horizon by a sage with his cane and a junket boat, or what Max calls a 'zen boat,' both reoccurring subjects in his work, drawn from inspirations and memories of his childhood in China.
