Peter Max has been an environmentalist since the 1960s, and involved in Earth Day since the very first one in 1970. The artist was commissioned to create commemorative art for Earth Day 2002, and 'Protect Our Planet Ver II' is a stunning piece from that collection.
Printmaking has been central to Max's practice since the 1960s and printing art forms are as important to him as his painting work. In this piece, Max reimagines the great wave subject and bold line work of the Japanese woodblock prints 'ukiyo-e' meaning 'pictures of the floating world.' In electric color and his 'Cosmic Art' style, that brought international acclaim, Max's delicate, peace birds fly at the crest of a powerful wave expressing the strength and synergy of our glorious planet - our home to treasure and protect.
