This rare black and white painting is reflective of Peter Max's drawing style which emerged in the 1970s. This style echoes the drawings of Matisse and Picasso with a minimal, broken flow of line, more suggestive than solid. 

The monk stands alone in the foreground of a floral shower in his meditative garden, a witness to the poetry of nature. He is a memory of the Buddhist monks that the artist watched and learned from as a child growing up in Shanghai, China.
