Peter Max is a classically trained realist painter. Early in his career he created masterful works of artistic discipline in realism and chiaroscuro - studying the traditional principles of light, form and color. Over the decades, his work evolved from from this foundation into a kinetic, spontaneous, expressionistic painting technique. 

The painting 'Head' captures the crossroads of these two styles - full with traditional form, tone and shadow, then a release of energetic, improvisational brushwork. Max's signature color, the most potent of artistic forces, moves flawlessly from bombastic, fauvist punctuations of pink, reds and blues to hues of grace and subtleness.
