A true patriot, Peter Max first painted Lady Liberty in 1976 to celebrate America's Bicentennial. His love affair with her has continued in the decades since as he experimented with variations in color, pattern and brushwork for her portraits. Max first painted his iconic 'Flag with Heart' in the early 1990s to honor the innovative, creative and freedom-loving spirit of America and its people - 'a country with a heart,' he says.
In this striking, printed collage, the artist juxtaposes a remarkable collection of his interpretations of these two great American symbols. Max often works through his inspirations simultaneously in pen, paint and print. Printmaking has been central to Max's practice since the 1960s and the printing art forms are as important to him as his painting work. In 'God Bless America,' the artist reveals a bold and moving color spectrum and rhythmic pattern that creates a poignant and patriotic graphic print.
