Painted and printed in 1980, this vintage work recalls the Chinese 'junk' sailboats Max watched as a child growing up in Shanghai. He calls them 'Zen Boats' - as he saw them guided by calm intuition. 

Max's 'Sailboats' peacefully glide across a kaleidoscopic horizon in parallel and in harmony. The sky is bursting with the artist's shapes, strokes and joyful color around them, bold hues balanced and tranquil. The setting sun has one strong beam left extending into the brilliant and kinetic sky. 

In this extraordinary and rare work, created almost half a century ago, and one of only 30 Artist Proofs, Peter Max created a fantastical dreamscape filled with euphoric color and motion.
