In the iconographical gallery of Peter Max, 'Zero Megalopolis' is the urbane, androgynous, interplanetary statesman that first emerged in the artist's drawings and paintings in the 1980s. With derby and monocle 'Zero' is the favored guest of salons and soirées - a visitor on a stellar adventure of peace and détente. 

'Zero Prism' is representative of Max's freestyle painting technique that emerged in the 1980's. During this time, the artist began painting with quick-drying acrylics, using large brushes that required movement of his entire body, not just his wrist. He painted robustly, with broad strokes and calligraphic lines, in a style called 'wet-on-wet' by painters like Larry Rivers, mixing colors right on the brush. Max's 'Zero Prism' is painted in the seven colors of the rainbow - just as a prism extracts a rainbow from white light that passes through it.
