Peter Max has made prints throughout his career, experimenting and discovering new techniques and processes through the decades in the printing arts. For this black and white series, the artist added unique color and movement to his ivory on ebony composition with hand-coloring in soft, subtle color washes and energetic pencil work.
In 'Sage with Cane III,' Max renders a sage with his cane, remembrances of his childhood in Shanghai, curved and flowing in harmony with the celestial landscape of suns, stars and moons around him. The artist has also embellished the margins and embossment seal with kinetic pencil work in this striking and otherworldly piece.
