Angels have appeared in Peter Max's work since the 1960s in drawings, paintings and prints. As Max moved into his expressionistic period in the 1980s, angels became one of his favorite subjects to paint. 

Inspiring Max as creatures of higher ideals and pureness of spirit, the artist has rendered 'Angel with Heart III' in his boldest and most striking of color palettes. The angel's form, in a robust, scarlet red, is met with the softer pinks and gold of her detailed wings. She emerges from a field of serene, sapphire blue with her heart open and beaming on her chest.
