Vlaminck
Acrylic on Canvas
40" x 30"
Peter Max's striking and dynamic portrait of influential French painter Maurice de Vlaminck is a homage to the artist that influenced Max's own journey from his classical training in realism to creating with bold, fauvist color and expressionistic brushwork.
A principal figure in the Fauve movement of the early 20th century, Vlaminck shook the art world establishment with his intense, exuberant paint application and unexpected and vibrant use of color. In the spirit of this approach, Max created 'Vlaminck' with exuberant and unusual juxtapositions of color and subject. The robust reds with blue highlights on the face and the contrast of bold and soft hues throughout the piece are unexpected and riveting - creating a remarkable work.
