2008 Liberty Head Ver. VII #3

Acrylic on Canvas

30" x 24"

A true patriot, Peter Max first painted Lady Liberty in 1976 to celebrate America's bicentennial. His love affair with Lady Liberty has continued in the decades since; as he continued to paint her in different forms and for many events and commissions. The artist has been invited to the White House by several presidents to paint her live or present his Liberty paintings for installation. Max's Liberty paintings are in the permanent collections of presidential libraries and U.S. Embassies around the world.

In the early 1980s, Peter Max spearheaded the effort to restore the Statue of Liberty with Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca. At the Liberty Centennial Reopening on July 4, 1986, the artist was asked to paint large canvases of her on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.

Inspired by the fireworks reflecting off of the newly-restored Lady Liberty at the reopening celebration; the artist began a new series of 'Liberty Head' paintings with flashes, swirls and planes of bold, fauvist color painted on and around her face. '2008 Liberty Head' is a powerful work from this Liberty painting series. Liberty's calm, steadfast expression is illuminated with joyful and celebratory, boldly-colored, textured brushwork - truly an iconic Peter max Liberty painting.
