Walking In Reeds Ver. III #11
Acrylic on Canvas
20" x 24"
'Walking in Reeds' is inspired by the Buddhist monks and sages that Peter Max watched and learned from growing up in Shanghai, China, and on visits to the Himalayan Mountains. A young Max would watch the monks make their solitary way along the mountain paths to their monasteries, often stopping to contemplate a sunset or the beauty of the mountains around them.
In the soft, minimalist landscape, the sage is a participant in the creation of the natural vista that surrounds him. This motif originated in Max's work as early 1965, where nature exists as an abstraction until the subject appears to perceive it and become a part of it. Likewise, art exists as a wonderful potentiality, until the artist serves as a channel for it to come into being.
