I.O.A.E. Umbrella Man Ver. VII #8
Acrylic on Canvas
30" x 40"
The 'Umbrella Man' is one of Peter Max's most famous signature characters, first emerging in the dawn of his Neo-Fauvist painting period of the 1980s. He is inspired by a famous photograph of cellist Pablo Casals, playing his cello on the beach.
In this more rare 'Images Of An Era' (I.O.A.E) composition, the 'Umbrella Man' stands askew looking into the horizon ahead. He and his umbrella appear to be in motion, moving with the rhythm of the tide before him. He is rendered in the artist's spontaneous, textured brushstrokes, bold in color against the subdued palette of the landscape.
