Peter Max painted 'Two Sages Looking at Sunrise' from his memories of the monks and sages of his childhood in Shanghai, China. The textural, kinetic, expressionistic brushstrokes of the clouds are juxtaposed with the smooth painting of the sage's robes. The horizon is forever changing in color, complexion and temperament, and the sages are witnesses to it all - a motif that originated in Max's work as early as 1965.
